From a young mission Province planted in 1971 to a community that now sends its own missionaries to the world — this is the story of Spiritan mission in Ghana.
The Spiritan mission in Ghana traces its roots to 1971, when a group of Irish Spiritans, who had been serving in Nigeria, relocated to Ghana following the Nigerian civil war. What began as a small missionary outpost has grown, over more than five decades, into a full Spiritan Province with its own Ghanaian membership, formation houses, and parishes.
From the outset, the Province's calling has centred on primary evangelization — bringing the Gospel and pastoral care to rural and under-resourced communities that were, and in many cases still are, under-served by the wider Church. That founding spirit continues to shape the Province's priorities today, alongside a strong, complementary commitment to Catholic education.
Today the Province is led by Ghanaian Spiritans who have taken up the mission first carried by the Irish founders, continuing to serve both at home and, increasingly, abroad.
Spiritan mission work in Ghana reaches beyond the parish gate — into rural communities, schools, and the everyday lives of the poor and marginalized.
Pastoral care and outreach in rural areas and emerging communities not yet served by an established parish.
Schools and vocational institutions, including technical and vocational training, that form the whole person.
Outreach to the poor and marginalized in line with the Spiritan charism of solidarity with those on the margins.
Raising the next generation of Ghanaian Spiritans through the Province's formation houses.
Ghana's Spiritan story has come full circle. The Province that was founded by missionaries from Ireland now forms and sends its own Ghanaian Spiritans into mission service in other countries, carrying forward the same charism that first brought the Congregation to Ghana — evangelization and service to the poor, wherever the need is greatest.
Ghanaian Spiritans currently serve in mission communities across Africa, the Americas, Europe, and beyond, including in the United States, in partnership with other Spiritan Provinces worldwide.
